2562076 - Supported Character Encoding - [LMS]

Symptom

1) When we import files, connector file, copy and paste values into fields, we are getting weird characters

2) Able to paste space or empty characters when it is not allowed

Environment

SuccessFactors Learning Management System

Cause

Because of the file encoding. It has to be UTF-8 and not ANSI or any other character encoding.

Resolution

1) When we import files, connector file, copy and paste values into fields, we are getting weird characters

- Please open the file that you used to input the values in the system in notepad++ and click "Encoding" tab and see what the encoding is. It should be UTF-8. Please fix that file with correct UTF-8 encoding and retry.

2) able to paste space or empty characters when it is not allowed

  • What we see as empty or space characters in one encoding could be a different character in a different encoding. So, an empty or space character in ANSI could be a meaningful character in UTF-8 and SuccessFactors LMS, like most of the software, understands and stores data only in UTF-8 encoding and would store that value with that characters. The same would be displayed in the UI also.
  • Always use UTF-8 encoding with any text based files (txt, csv) you use in the LMS system.
  • If you are copying the values from text based tools, notepad, notepad++, word, excel etc. make sure the encoding is UTF-8.
  • If the source is incorrect (incorrect encoding) and you uploaded them into LMS system and copy that value from the LMS again and re-enter for a new item, those values would also have this issue. If you are copying, please correct the encoding and leave the extra or unnecessary characters and use only the values that you need.

- This is not a SuccessFactors restriction but rather a standard rule any software system would follow. We need to standardize a character encoding so that all the values are stored and retrieved in one format without any discrepancy or UI/UX issue.

- SuccessFactors LMS uses UTF-8 format for all the input files admins use to create or update records in the system.
