2882412 - Error Message When Using Report Value Help

Image/data in this KBA is from SAP internal systems, sample data, or demo systems. Any resemblance to real data is purely coincidental.

You created a custom data source and you are trying to select a value for the 'XYZ' characteristic using the Value Help via Report Wizard or Selection tab on report. It keeps loading until 'Report cannot be opened; Report an incident' or 'An Exeption Occured' messages are experienced.

  • SAP Cloud for Customer
  • SAP Business ByDesign

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Go to the Business Analytics work center.
  2. Go to the Design Data Sources view.
  3. Search for a custom data source (e.g XYZ).
  4. Click on the Value Help for 'XYZ' characteristic.
  5. It keeps loading and no value appears to be selected.
  6. You can see the error message 'Report cannot be opened; report an incident' message.

  1. Go to the Business Analytics work center.
  2. Go to the Design Reports view.
  3. Click on New.
  4. Select the custom data source (e.g XYZ).
  5. Go to Step 4.
  6. Select 'Fixed Value Selection' for 'XYZ' characteristic.
  7. Click on 'Set Fixed Value Selection'.
  8. Click on Value Help for 'XYZ' characteristic.
  9. You can see an error message 'An Exception Occured'

This can happen when the custom data source is a joined data source and it has a high amount of records. When the Value Help is of 'Use Context'  and it is opened for any characteristic, the system needs to apply the join condition initially and then it will bring the entries to be selected in the Value Help.  In this case the Value Help does not bring any value because the data source has too many records to be joined before shows it on the Value Help for further selections. It is is due to a time out error in the backend process which occurs whenever the processed amount of data is too high.

In order to filter on the characteristic 'XYZ' which cannot be selected via Value Help, you can just type the desired value for the characteristic under the 'Selection' tab on the report (without using Value Help). Please see the screenshot below where we just wrote the desired value and the system filtered accordingly on the report.

And for the second case, when using the Report Wizard, in order to set a 'Fixed Value Selection' for the 'XYZ' characteristic you can just click on the 'Set Fixed Value Selection' and write the desired value (without using Value Help). Please see the both screenshot below where we just wrote the desired value and the system interpreted it:
