Symptom
How to play PowerPoint content in LMS without downloading it
Environment
SAP SuccessFactors Learning Management System (LMS) - All Supported Versions
Resolution
When you upload a PowerPoint file (*.ppt or *.pptx) in LMS, it gets saved with the PPT extension file. This means that when you launch the content object, the file will be downloaded to the user's machine and then the user would be able to view it in the PowerPoint viewer application.
This is a standard behavior of the web browser and cannot be controlled by the LMS Application. Some content such as *.mp4, *.mp3, *.jpeg, etc. can be directly opened in the browser. This is because the browser has the capability to render the content in the window itself. Normally browsers are not capable to play content such as *.ppt, *.pptx, *.doc or *.xls, etc. They would have to be opened in their respective application viewer such as Microsoft Office applications.
If you want the users to view the PowerPoint content in the browser window, you will need to create it as an AICC or SCORM Content. To do this, you will need to use special tools such as Articulate, SAP WPB, Adobe Captivate, etc.
These tools give you the option to convert various types of files to AICC or SCORM content. Once you have created the content, you can import it in the LMS Application. Then there should not be any issues accessing the content in the browser window.
