It is manual at this point in time because, due to the number and variability of activities in a program, we’d need to build a whole new feature for setting up grading rules in order to make this process automated. The manual process was actually requested and verified with customers, who take a look at schedule offering attendance and completion status, online content and individual activity completion, optional activity completion, and exam grades received and apply their own grading logic in order to determine what grade the user would get. Some questions to ask in order to help customers understand the complexity of this:
- If I complete optional activities, should my grade increase?
- If attendance for scheduled offerings wasn’t 100% but the admin gave me a waiver for some, should my grade be lower?
- If I complete exams, should the grade I get reflect a percentage of the total amount of points I can get for that activity?
- Should all activities, required or optional, be considered to have equal weight? Is completing a text-based activity the same thing as completing a 10-hour online course?
To sum up, the grading logic varies from customer to customer so for now, we are letting customers decide what their grading logic should be after a program becomes complete. If customers have ideas on building some basic standard behavior, they should express it on the Influence tool so we can start a discussion with more customers on the topic.
