While creating new opportunities you noticed that the Opportunity IDs assigned to each opportunity do not follow a logical numbering order (e. g. ascending order or descending order).
The same is valid for Sales Quotes and Activities.
Reproducing the Issue
- Go to Sales work center
- Go to Opportunities view
- On top of the screen, right-hand side, click New to create a New Opportunity through the quick create option
- Enter data accordingly and click Save
Notice that the newly created Opportunity received a non-sequential ID (e. g. the last one you've created was 46810 and this new one is 46813).
This is the system standard behavior. As there are no legal requirements to offer continuous and near number ranges for Opportunities, Sales Quotes and Activities (like there are for e.g. Bills) the system architecture is not designed to offer a sequential range of IDs, as it would affect performance without necessity.
This concept embraces behaviors such as: every time you click the quick create button New for a New Opportunity but Cancel the action without saving the New Opportunity, the system automatically allocates an ID for this action.
System is working as designed. There are no legal requirements to have the Opportunity IDs, Sales Quote IDs or Activity IDs created in a logical numbering order.
