  • How to open a text (.txt)  file through Microsoft Excel?

  • Platform Services & Tools

  • SuccessFactors uses .csv file format. Many users will have Microsoft Excel installed on their laptop, pc or mac. The .csv file is most likely to be opened by Microsoft Excel by default. This might cause a loss of data or a wrong display.

•      Openoffice might be a solution. If you have only Microsoft Excel, then you can follow this procedure to open the file and display most characters correctly:

•      Copy the .csv file

•      Change the extension of the copy from .csv to .txt

•      Open Excel

•      Click on “Data” tab

•      Click on “From text” icon

•      Browse for the .txt file

•      Open it

•      A pop-up window appears

•      Select “Delimited - Characters such as commas or tabs separate each field.”

•      In the "File Origin" field, select “65001 : Unicode (UTF-8)”

•      Click “next”

•      Select the relevant “Delimiter” (note: you will know you have chosen the correct one by checking the preview at the bottom of the pop-up window)

•      Click “next”

•      Select “general” or “text” or “date”, etc. accordingly to the selected column in the preview

•      Click “finish”

  • You can now view characters such as characters from another alphabet. This is very useful when you wish to check data from an instance with multiple languages enabled.
