2109416 - Initial Capitalization Date Must be in Closed Fiscal Year - Retroactive Capitalization for Fixed Asset

Symptom

You create a manual Retroactive Capitalization posting for Fixed Asset ABC. When you press Simulate/Post an error message appears (ABC represents the Fixed Asset ID):

  • 'Initial capital. date must be in closed fiscal year; first opened year YYYY. Journal entries for journal entry voucher cannot be simulated.' (YYYY represents the current, open fiscal year)

Environment

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Go to the Fixed Assets work center.
  2. Go to the Fixed Assets view.
  3. Select the Fixed Asset ABC.
  4. Press Manual Posting and select Retroactive Acquisition.
  5. Define the Document Date and the Posting Date in the Current Year YYYY.
  6. Enter the Initial Posting date in Fiscal Year YYYY.
  7. Press Simulate/Post.

Cause

  • Retroactive capitalization is the revaluation of a fixed asset for which the acquisition costs were set too low in the past. If the fiscal year in which these acquisition costs should have been capitalized is now closed, then you can post the Retroactive capitalization.
  • The posting date of a Retroactive Capitalization must be in the first fiscal year open for posting, here YYYY. All other, previous fiscal years, such as XXXX, must be already carried over.
  • Note, Retroactive capitalization does not equate subsequent acquisition in the current fiscal year: If you need to post additional acquisition costs into the current fiscal year YYYY and do not need to revaluate the Fixed Asset's net value from its Initial Capitalization date, you can create a normal acquisition posting to increase the Fixed Asset's net value.

Resolution

Instead of Retroactive Acquisition select the Acquisition manual posting. Alternatively, use the Fixed Asset Procurement process to capitalize the Asset (by creating a Supplier Invoice or Goods receipt for the Fixed Asset's Individual Material.

To create a manual Acquisition via Journal Entry Voucher

  1. Go to the Fixed Assets work center.
  2. Go to the Fixed Assets - view.
  3. Select the respective Fixed Asset.
  4. Press Manual Posting and select Acquisition.
  5. Define the Document Date and the Posting Date
  6. In the Relating To field select 1 - Current Year.
  7. Press Simulate/Post.
