Scenario: When entering National ID and try to save, the system tells me to enter a valid National ID number. We have a special set of allowed characters configured, and we are entering the ID correctly according to the format provided on screen, but we get an error.

It is likely that you have enabled National ID Validations (Admin Tools > Company System and Logo Settings > Enable National ID Validations). Enabling this feature will enable algorithm based validations, which will be used instead of those configured in the Country Specific Succession Data Model. These validations use algorithms to validate whether the ID number being entered is correctly formatted, depending on the country you have selected. This maybe a mathematical algorithm or possible reliant on certain values being correctly set in the Biographical Information portlet (personInfo).
Disabling this feature will cause the system to follow the National ID Format configuration defined in the Country Specific Succession Data Model configuration file (which can be configured to adhere to any format you have chosen) instead of using hard-coded algorithms to calculate and validate an ID number.
