2088656 - Legacy Picklists: What are the character limitations on a picklist? ORA-12899: value too large for column error - Platform

Symptom

  • This KBA focuses only on Legacy picklists. For MDF picklists see KBA 2328179 - Legacy to MDF Picklist Migrations | General Information

  • Picklist character limitations.

  • Is there a character limitation on Picklist?

Environment

  • BizX Platform

Resolution

  • There IS NOT a limitation on the size of the Picklist ID, except for the limitation of the field definition. For example,  if the picklist field is defined as vfld1 – vfld9 and Max-Length= 4000,  however it would be a rare case for the picklist iID to exceed 4000 characters.

  • There IS a limitation on the size of the Picklist LABEL.   The  database column can only store a max 255 byte of characters for English.  For other muti-byte encoded language, it stores less than 255 characters.

  • If the Picklist LABEL exceeds the max 255 bytes, then you will receive the following error when importing the Picklist;   ORA-12899: value too large for column error.
