Resolution

SuccessFactors Stack Ranker is a premium addition to the SuccessFactors suite of Performance & Talent Management tools. Stack Ranker lets you make accurate assessments about your entire team without having to do individual performance reviews. Stack Ranker lets you visually analyze how your team stacks up against one another in any performance area. You can now effortlessly compare team members against a single critical role-related competency or on overall performance. You can also incorporate other performance factors like criticality of roles to serve as tie-breakers for a more complete assessment. Stack Ranker gives you results quickly and comes complete with the analysis tools you’ll use to get the up-to-the minute pulse on your team, making it so much easier for you to respond instantly to changing business priorities and direction.

Costs: Stack Ranker is free for all clients subscribed to PM v12A and shows within the Team/Manager Overview.

How does SuccessFactors Stack Ranker work?

  • Stack Ranker displays your entire team side-by-side on a single page.

  • Who shows in the stack is dependent upon the processes you are involved with. Typically this will be a managers direct reports, however if you are involved in many processes (you are in the route map) then you may see people who are not your direct reports. Also, if you were part of the process originally, but had a manager change, you may see those for the process you were originally part of.

  • Common team competencies or other performance criteria are listed on the page, too. As you rate each team member, the Summary area automatically displays the team in ranking order, with the order changing dynamically as you continue your assessment. When you’re done, you’ll see your team shown in the order of highest overall performer to lowest overall performer. You can then narrow the performance criteria, for example, you can select a single competency, and see how your team stacks up.

  • Note: The form needs to be in-progress (not in signature or completed) and in the inbox of the ranker for them to be able modify the competency item-rating. If it is not then as you can see above with Vik Stokes, that user will be grayed out where you cannot modify the ratings for that person.

Access Via Team Overview

  • Stack ranker button will appear in team overview once the Performance template have the property configuration. Please refer to "What Configuration is Required" section below.

What Configuration is Required?

  1. Enable Stack Ranker

Go to Admin Center > Performance Management Feature Settings > Enable Stack Ranker for Performance Management

  2. Configure Form Template for Stack Ranker

    1. Enable team rater in the form template via Admin CenterManage Templates > Select the Template > General Settings > select Allow managers to stack rank employees on competency sections: Globally or Section by Section option.

    2. Stack Ranker access may be limited on a per-section basis using action permissions. Configure the action-permission element in the sf-form.dtd. A new refid attribute value my-team-rater will be used to identify action permissions for MyTeamRater.

      Example action-permission element:

      <action-permission type="none">
         <role-name>E</role-name>
         <action refid="my-team-rater" />
         <route-step stepid="*"/>
      </action-permission>

As Stack Ranker is only applicable to the Competency and Summary sections, adding the action-permission element with the my-team-rated refid in other sections will have no effect. Also the form template must have Summary section.

For the complete configuration details, please refer to our PM v12A Implementation Guide (requires SAP Help Portal login).

Assumptions & Dependencies

  • If a form template was configured without action permissions, then the Stack Ranker button will show up for everyone now.
  • In order for a manager to use the Stack Ranker, they have to have the forms created in their Inbox (the product does not automatically create the necessary forms).
  • Stack Ranker only supports competencies in competency sections.
  • Stack Ranker does not support behaviors.
  • Competency section intro text is not supported (i.e. will not be displayed) on the Stack Ranker page.
  • Stack Ranker as of B1405 works for 360 form template types.
  • Stack Ranker does not support editing or viewing of the overall performance score.
  • The Performance form template must have a Summary section (summary-sect). Form configured with ONLY Objective/Competency Summary or Performance Potential Summary section will not have the stack ranker capability
  • There is no batch document routing available from the Stack Ranker.
  • Stack Ranker supports competencies sections configured with either hard coded competencies or job-code related competencies.
  • By default Stack Ranker only displays a user's direct reports but can be configured to support anyone you have a form for.
  • Editing or viewing weights are not supported in the Stack Ranker.
  • Stack Ranker does support the section calculation if item weights are enabled.
  • Stack Ranker does not support adding or removing of competencies on the page.
  • Collaborative route map steps are not supported in the Stack Ranker.
  • The Friendly's calculation method is not supported in the Stack Ranker calculation.
  • Plain text comments (none RTE) are supported in the Stack Ranker, but user will be unable to use legal scan, spell check, or writing assistant.
  • The section comments do not support writing assistant.
  • The following form configurations are assumed for all forms based on the form that Stack Ranker was opened from.
    a. Rating scale
    b. Field permissions
  • There is no way to select which style of rating scale is displayed. This is determined based on the system criteria.
  • At this time there is no planned timeframe for future roadmap enhancements to Stack Ranker.
  • Reports and Dashboards can be used for Stack Ranker as with any PM form template type.
  • Stack Ranker was performance tested for 50 direct reports with 20 competencies each.
  • Stack Ranker only supports individual competency ratings and not overall competency ratings
  • The system will never pull a user’s own form into the Stack Ranker. I have forms for a group of people, and I have a form where I’m the subject too. When I’m stack ranking, I shouldn’t be stack ranking myself.
  • In b0911 we introduced the ability to expand who you can stack rank against from just your direct reports to  everyone you have a form for. This means if you have someone’s form they will show up when you open up the Stack Ranker. As with the other item, this will also impact all forms regardless of creation date.

To enable the ability to see everyone (more than just your direct reports) on the Stack Ranker page please go to Admin Center > Performance Management Feature Settings > Enable Stack Ranker for Performance Management - Enable display of all forms but self.

The user will be able to access the MyTeamRater from entry points:

  • Team Overview
  • Competency / Summary section of a PM form.

The conditions for a manager to be able to access the Team Rater or Stack Ranker can be divided into 3 pieces:

CHECK 1 - Enable my team rater for the company instance.

  • Set a flag in the form template (SF)
  • Set action permissions in the form template (SF)
  • Enable the my team rater flag from admin tools (Company Admin)

CHECK 2 - Display / hide the my team rater in a form (section / field level permissions)

  • Display the my team rater link only for competency and summary sections.
  • Your template is configuredUser has direct reports
  • User has direct reports
  • User has forms created from this form template in the Inbox / En Route / Completed folder with due date +/-60 days from due date of current form.

CHECK 3 - Get the list of direct reports and corresponding ratings.

  • Check if the logged in user can rate the subject (field permissions for item-rating)
  • If the form is in the manager's Inbox and the rest of the conditions are met, the ratings are editable. If the form is not in the manager's Inbox, the ratings are still displayed but not editable.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • What if a user has more than 1 form?

The system shall update/reference the most recent document for an employee based on form creation date when more than one document meets the criteria per employee.
  • Can we stack rank people if they are not your direct report?

Yes. Although by default stack ranker is designed for managers to rank their direct reports only, there is an option to stack rank others you have forms for. You have the ability to expand who you can stack rank against from just your direct reports to  everyone you have a form for. This means if you have someone’s form they will show up when you open up the Stack Ranker. As with the other item, this will also impact all forms regardless of creation date.

To enable the ability to see everyone (more than just your direct reports) on the Stack Ranker page please go to Admin Center Performance Management Feature Settings > Enable Stack Ranker for Performance Management - Enable display of all forms but self.

You must however have been granted write permission to alter the item-ratings for all those you are going to stack rank. If for example in the PM process you have HR as a step, but in that step you blocked HR from being able to change the item-ratings, you cannot now send all the forms to the HR person in a future step and expect they can now stack rank the same people. Therefore for anyone to be able to use stack ranker, you must have item-rating permissions for everyone in that group. If not you will see the message “You do not have permission to rank these users”.
  • Why are we seeing the message "You do not have permission to rank these users”?

The person using stack ranker must have write permissions for everyone that is part of the stack.

Please refer to the above question on stack ranking people who are not your direct report.

  • How are people ordered in the stack ranker?

The system shall display employees left to right in alphabetical order based on last name.

  • When will stack ranker show ratings as a drop down list as opposed to the typical graphic?

The system shall display the rating scale (i.e. horizontal selections that change color on mouse over an can be selected with one click) when the rating scale meets all of the following conditions:

The system shall display the rating scale as a drop-down when any of the following conditions are met:

    a. The rating scale has more than 7 values.
    b. The rating scale values are not single digit positive integers or zero (i.e. anything other than 0 - 9)
  • Does stack ranker support a reverse scale?

         Yes

  • Can we change the term Stack Ranker?

Yes. The term Stack Ranker is now text-replaceable. To make the change, go to Admin Center > Text Replacement and scroll down to the bottom of the page until you see the Stack Ranker entry. Make your changes and save your work. You'll notice the text change if you're currently using Stack Ranker.
  • When will a user see the button to access to My Team Rater page from the following sections:

    Competency section

The system shall display a button to the My Team Rater in a competency section when all of the following conditions apply:

    a. Logged in user has multiple direct reports with this form template (should this be a constraint?  Does it matter if I see only one person on the My Team Rater grid?)
    b. Logged in user has edit rights to the item rating of record
    c. Form template is configured to use ratings in this section

    Summary section

The system shall display a button to the My Team Rater in a summary section when all of the following conditions apply:

    a. Logged in user has multiple direct reports with this form template (should this be a constraint?  Does it matter if I see only one person on the My Team Rater grid?)
    b. Form template is configured with an overall calculated performance score, overall manual performance score, or both.

  • In the form, I see the Team Ranker pod at the top but why I don't see all my direct reports?

If the Team Ranker Pod doesn't show the ranks of other employees reporting to you, this means that the "Start of Review" option within the Route Map has not been selected. Note that Stack Ranker is accessed via Team Overview which means the form has to show there as well to stack rank. Ensure that Start of Review is enabled usually in the first step of your route map via Admin Center > Manage Route Maps.
