Symptom
- Crystal Reports fails to start.
- When attempting to open Crystal Reports, it fails with the error:
"The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail."
Environment
- SAP Crystal Reports 2011
Reproducing the Issue
- Install Crystal Reports 2011 on a MS Windows Server 2008 R2 computer.
- Launch Crystal Reports 2011
- It displays the following error message:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\SAP BusinessObjects\SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 4.0\win32_x86\crw32.exe
The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail."
- The application event log shows the detailed message as:
Activation context generation failed for "c:\Program Files (x86)\Business Objects\BusinessObjects Enterprise 12.0\win32_x86\win32.exe". Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC80.CRT, processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="8.0.50727.4053" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.
Cause
- This error occurs when Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package is installed but the security update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package is not applied.
Resolution
- Update the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable
- From the Microsoft Download Center, download the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package security update
- Install the downloaded security update vcredist_x86.exe
- Restart the computer.
- Launch Crystal Reports 2011
