SAP Knowledge Base Article - Public

1396219 - Error: "The value is not valid." only appears on string type of field when used in CR mandatory prompt

Symptom

  • Error message appears in string type of field when used in CR mandatory prompt when a value is not entered
  • Same error message do not appear on any other type of field (ie number, date) when used in CR Mandatory prompt
  • Error: "The value is not valid."

Environment

  • Crystal Reports XI R2
  • Crystal Reports 2008
  • Crystal Reports 2008 SP2

Reproducing the Issue

1.       Open Crystal Reports 2008

2.       Create a new blank report.

3.       In the next screen create a new connection in the Access/Excel folder option and select the database name as the link below:

C:\Program Files\Business Objects\BusinessObjects Enterprise 12.0\Samples\en\UniverseSamples\club.mdb

4.       In the list of tables for the database select the Customer table.

5.       Select all fields for the customer table to display and click finish. See below:

6.       In the Field Explorer create 2 new parameter fields.  One called Customer ID and One called Last Name.

The Parameters should be of Dynamic list of values and select cust_id as the value fields fo Customer ID and last_name for the last name parameter.  All other options should be default.  See below:

7.       In the Crystal Rpeorts menu go to Report>Selection Formulas>Record.

8.       In the next screen enter the following syntax and save the formula:

{Customer.cust_id} = {?Customer ID}AND {Customer.last_name} = {?Last name}

9.       When the user prompt screen is displayed on running the report you will have 2 mandatory drop down boxes as seen below.

NOTE : The issue is that when the user does not select a value for the Customer ID no message is displayed and the cursor only jumps to the drop down field.  If only the last Name value is not entered then the message “The Value is not Valid” appears with a caution icon.

From tests, only a string type field that is a drop down box will display this message. Other types of fields such as numeric or manual user entry prompts do not display this message.
