1216774 - Inserting an image into a report greatly increases the file size

Symptom

When a JPG file or other compressed image is inserted into a report, the report's file size can be significantly increased.

For example, a report that was originally 50 KB in size can grow to over 1000 KB when a 50 KB JPG is inserted.

Resolution

This file size increase occurs by design. Crystal Reports (CR) uncompresses JPGs or other inserted compressed images to a bitmap (BMP) format in order to record the image at the time of insertion and keep the image's quality constant despite file moves or manipulation. BMP files are much larger than the equivalent JPG.

By converting the image to a BMP file, Crystal Reports maintains high image quality despite image manipulation in the report. This increases the report's size.

For information on changes in OLE images please see Note 1216187 regarding vector-based graphics in CR 9 and CR 10.
