1183913 - Red X with Crystal Reports XI R2 .NET Deployment to Windows 2003

An ASP.NET 2005 application using Crystal Reports XI R2 to display reports has been deployed to a Windows 2003 Server. The application was installed to a non-default web site. When ran, the report shows the report data fine, but the toolbar and group tree images all appear as red x's. This happens with both the Merge Modules and .NET Server Install methods for deployment.

When installing, the Merge Modules and .NET Server Install setup the virtual directory needed for the toolbar images in the Default Web Site on the server, rather than the custom, or non-default web site.

You need to manually add the virtual directory to view the tool bar images. The virtual directory for a Windows 2003 Server needs to be placed in the
  • <web site>
  • aspnet_client
  • system_web
  • 2_0_50727 folder structure.
To setup the Virtual Directory follow these steps:
  1. Start Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager on the Windows 2003 Server.
  2. Expand Web Sites, then your web site.
  3. Under your web site, expand aspnet_client, then system_web.
  4. Right click on the 2_0_50727 folder, and choose New - Virtual Directory.
  5. On the Virtual Directory Creation Wizard, click the Next button
  6. Enter the alias name for the virtual directory, which is: crystalreportviewers115, and then click the Next button
  7. Click the browse button, and expand the following folder structure:
    •  <system drive>
    • Program Files
    • Business Objects
    • Common
    • 3.5
    • crystalreportviewers115 - Select this folder, then click the OK button
  8. Click the Next button
  9. On the Virtual Directory Access Permissions screen, click the Next button
  10. Click the Finish button

Re-run your ASP.NET application at this point, and you should see the toolbar images as expected.
