Is there an alternative to using Akamai URLs for the CDN and therefore for CSB image content storage

Non Akamai is not supported by the Product today, and is currently not in the product roadmap.

There is no alternative within CSB. Customers who cannot use Akamai cannot leverage CSB and must use the RCM legacy career site instead.

Customers are invited to submit an enhancement request as per KBA below.
