2758322 - Error: 'Failed to export the report.' when exporting a report to PDF format from Crystal Reports

Symptom

  • Failed to export a report to PDF.
  • Error: 'Failed to export the report.'
  • In Crystal Reports, when exporting a report to PDF format, it generates the error: 'Failed to export the report.'

Reproducing the Issue

  1. In Crystal Reports, open a report.
  2. Export the report to PDF format.
      
    It then generates the error: 'Failed to export the report.'

Cause

  • This rare scenario occurs when an object on the report is corrupted, and causes the export to PDF to fails. 

Resolution

  • Remove the corrupted object(s) from the report design. 
      
  • In Crystal Reports, to identify which object on the report that is causing the issue:
       
    1. Open the report in Crystal Reports.
        
    2. Save the report locally under a different name for backup purposes.
          
    3. Remove one section at a time, to help identify in which section the corrupted object is located.
         
      1. 3.1 Under the menu "Report", select "Section Expert"
          
      2. 3.2 In the "Section Expert" window, select a section, and click "Insert"
           
      3. 3.3 This will add a new section below.
             ( For example: it will add the Report Header b )
           
      4. 3.4 Select the top section, and click "Delete"
              ( For example: select the Report Header a, and click "Delete" )
            
      5. 3.5 Click "OK"
          
        This will remove all the content for that specific section.
              
    4. Export the report to PDF format.
          
    5. If it still generates the error when exporting, then repeat step 3 and 4, until you find the section that contains a corrupted object.
         
    6. When the report export to PDF format successfully, you have now identify which section contains the corrupted. Then, take the original copy of the report, and save it again under a different name for backup purposes.
        
    7. Start removing database fields, pictures, objects from the section that contain a corrupted object.
        
    8. Export the report to PDF format.
        
    9. If it still generates the error when exporting, then repeat step 7 and 8, until you find the object in the section that contains a corrupted object.
        
    10. Once you identified which object caused the issue, open the original report, remove the object(s), and re-add the object if needed.
       
      You will then be able to successfully export the report to PDF format.
         
        
      Note: In most cases, the corrupted object is a image.
