2080126 - How do Employment Information > Hire Date and Original Start Date fields work? - Employee Central

Symptom

  • “Original Start Date” field is used to store the very 1st Hire date for an Employee. When Hiring and Employee via the Add New Employee (or the Manage Pending Hires/Manage Inactive Employee) wizard(s), the field “Original Start Date” located under Employment Information, gets populated with the 1st Hire record Effective Start Date that an Employee account receives when he/she is Hired into the system.
  • This initial hire date comes from the Hire Date field. From that point onwards, if the employee is then Terminated and Rehired, their Hire Date field under Employment Details will be updated to display the Employees latest Hire record type’s Effective Start Date (in this scenario, the system will display the Effective Start Date of the Rehire record for that Employee).

Image/data in this KBA is from SAP internal systems, sample data, or demo systems. Any resemblance to real data is purely coincidental.

Resolution

The Original Start Date field gets populated by the Effective Start Date of the Job Info "Hire" record (with the Hire event) - the very first time the employee is hired.  The system will automatically correct this value when the first Job Info Hire record is re-imported or hire date is changed using the Hire Date Correction tool, if the hire and original start date have the same value. You can also change the Original Start Date value via Employment Details import or the Edit Employment UI.

When you Rehire Inactive employee with New Employment, the Original Start Date will not be same as old employment's Original Start Date, because the new employment will have new user id and Original start date for new employment will have the Date as First Jobinfo record with Hire event.

If you require to store a date as an "Original" hire date, where you are not storing a corresponding Job Info Hire record for this "initial" Hire date (i.e. you are not loading in a full Job History but only "from a cut-over date"), then you must implement this "Original/Initial Hire" date field using a custom-date field instead. The Original Start Date field has logic that will ensure the system will try to enforce setting this value to the Job Info Hire records Effective Start Date.
