Symptom
The document numbering of sales documents such as Sales Orders, Service Orders, Service Requests and Service Confirmations is not sequential.
Environment
SAP Business ByDesign
Reproducing the Issue
- Go to the Sales Orders work center.
- Select the Sales Orders view.
- Select in the Show field the option All Orders.
- Sort the Sales Orders ID column.
You will find some gaps in the numbering of the Sales Order ID. The number range is not sequential.
Cause
The number of Sales Orders, Service Orders, Service Requests and Service Confirmations are not sequential. The numbering rules are different from accounting documents. If you select, for example, the New Service Order hyperlink, the Number will be reserved even if the document is not saved. If the action is canceled without saving the document this will lead to a 'lost' number.
Numbering rules and the need to explain gaps in number ranges currently only hold for accounting documents, but not for documents such as for example, Service Orders. There is no legal or accounting principle based requirement concerning the internal number of these documents. Since forcing a strict numbering has a big impact on the system performance, we have not implemented a numbering rules for sales documents unless there is a strict legal requirement.
Therefore, the number range of documents such as Service Orders will not be sequential.
Resolution
This is the current behavior provided by SAP Business ByDesign.
We are considering making this feature available in a future release.
