Environment

In Business ByDesign:
- Go to Product Portfolio Work Center.
- Select view Products.
- Select By Materials subview.
- Click New, to create a new product.
- Enter a Material ID which is the combination of special characters and alphanumeric characters. For example: 1234-AB.
- Fill other required fields with any data and click the Save button.
System throws above error message.
In Cloud for Customer:
- Go to the Products work center.
- Then go to the Product Administration view.
- Click New, to create a new product.
- Enter a Material ID which is the combination of special characters and alphanumeric characters. For example: 1234-AB.
- Fill other required fields with any data and click the Save button.
System throws above error message.
Cause
If the setting for alphanumeric and special characters number ranges is not maintained in the fine-tuning activity Number Range for Materials, it is not possible to use alpha numeric characters/special characters for Material ID.
Resolution
- Go to work center Business Configuration.
- Access the Overview work center view.
- Search and open fine-tuning activity Number Range for Materials.
- Enter the length of the Material ID in the field Total Length (including prefix).
- Fill the fields Start Number and End Number according to your requirements and make sure to set Interval Type as Manual
Now you are able to define the Material ID using alphanumeric and Special characters.
Please note that lexographic check is used for number ranges. Hence the length of the Number range cannot be limited for a particular length.
Please check the 'KBA 1867307 - Materials are Created With the IDs Which are Out of the Range Maintained in Business Configuration' for further details.
Below, you can find some examples on how to set up the number ranges:
Example 1:
Start Number: .
End Number: Z999Z
Interval Type: Manual
Then you can define Material ID like: 1X2-5, 5-01A, 1-99Z, A12J
Example 2:
Start Number: .
End Number: Z9999999Z
Interval Type: Manual
Then you can define Material ID like: 0X001A-1A, 1256-01AA, 10001-99Z, 9X1234Z99, A1236GHAG
