The New Zealand government has announced the COVID-19 Leave Payment Scheme effective from 17 March 2020.
The new scheme is to ensure that anyone who loses their regular income due to self isolation for COVID-19 will still receive a payment. The employer is required to pass on the full weekly amount to the employees according to circumstances below:
- $585.80 to a person working 20 hours or more per week
- $350.00 to a person working less than 20 hours per week.
There are some eligibility criterias. For example, state sector employers cannot receive the payment as it is expected that they will pay employee their normal wages through periods of self-isolation. So it's recommended to familiarize yourself with the scheme details. Details of the scheme can be found on the Employment New Zealand website.
