When upgrading from SAP Solution Manager 7.1 to 7.2, you may have to go through the so-called content activation process which is described in the Content Activation Wiki (chapter 2.3 of the Content Activation Guide tells you whether or not you need to go through content activation; if the answer is No, you can skip content activation altogether and you can ignore this knowledge article, too; instead upgrade to SAP Solution Manager 7.2, call transaction PREPARE_ACTIVATION, click Enter Guided Procedure and press button 'Opt out of Content Activation' - afterwards simply start working with your brandnew Solution Manager 7.2).
Content activation can be a complex procedure. To minimize time spent with content activation it is absolutely essential that technically, both your outgoing 7.1 and incoming 7.2 systems are optimally prepared. A crucial element of system preparation is flawless implementation of a number of SAP Notes on both the SAP Solution Manager 7.1 and 7.2 systems. This KBA (2599354) tells you how to achieve just that.
Until 3 April 2018, KBA 2536523 had been the single source of truth regarding system preparation for 7.1 to 7.2 content activation. This KBA (2599354) improves on and fully replaces the former lead-KBA 2536523.
To avoid getting caught up in the transition from KBA 2536523 to KBA 2599354, take note of the following:
- do not switch "in the middle" i.e. continue to use solely the instructions in KBA 2536523, if you are already in the midst of working through that KBA (2536523),
- somewhat counterintuitive, but also do not switch, if for some reason you (unwisely) decided to not follow KBA 2536523, but simply went through the 7.1 core SAP Notes managed by KBA 2536523, namely SAP Notes 2324520 and 2403108 and you got badly stuck with errors while implementing 2324520 and 2403108; trying a fresh start with KBA 2599354 will only make things worse, not better.
- if your SAP Solution Manager 7.1 is on SP15 or higher, do not bother following the TCI path to note implementation, but simply implement SAP Note 2403108. This means that after implementation of SAP Note 2403108 you can skip Step 1(FT) altogether and get started at Step 2(FT) item 4 ("When starting ...") below.
