2352929 - ASE hangs due to COMMIT processes failing in bufpindirty - SAP ASE

You are running applications on SAP ASE 160.

You find the ASE to hang or become unresponsive all of a sudden. New connections are not accepted and existing server processes (spids) seem to hang.

A check for running processes shows several COMMIT and/or ROLLBACK spids  - as in,  many transactions stay in COMMIT or ROLLBACK state

Furthermore, the ASE errorlog contains the following errors ----  NOTE: these could be (and most likely are) reported much before the ASE assumes a "hung" state  ----

  • WARNING: 1 buffer was found in a predirty state during the termination of spid 3488 (Pss: 0x0x00000004b86ab8d8).
    kernel  SQL causing error : commit
  • signal 11 in bufpindirty()
  • stacktraces referencing functions: plcblock__flush(), xls_flush_plcqueue(), finishlog(), xact_commit()
  • in some cases, signal 11 in smp_bufpredirty() is encountered
