2111265 - Errors 5899 & 5861 indicate the 'max memory' value is not high enough. ASE boots despite underconfigured memory.

Symptom

  • SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) server boots despite memory is underconfigured.

  • It may report a boot time error 5899:

Error: 5899, Severity: 16, State: 1
The value of the 'max memory' parameter (xxxxx) defined in the configuration file is not high enough to set the other parameter values specified in the configuration file.

  • It may report a runtime error 5861. For example, when sp_configure is executed (even for options that do not require more memory):

1> sp_configure "allow updates", 1
2> go

Msg 5861, Level 16, State 2:
Server 'serverName', Procedure 'sp_configure', Line 1357:
The current 'max memory' value 'xxxxx', is not sufficient to change the parameter 'allow updates to system tables' to '1'. 'max memory' should be greater than 'total logical memory' 'yyyyy' required for the configuration.
