3081721 - Emails not able to be sent due to javax.net.ssl.SSLHandshakeException

Symptom

When attempting to send an email from Commerce, you get an error similar to the following:

Caused by: javax.mail.MessagingException: Could not convert socket to TLS; nested exception is: javax.net.ssl.SSLHandshakeException: No appropriate protocol (protocol is disabled or cipher suites are inappropriate) at com.sun.mail.smtp.SMTPTransport.startTLS(SMTPTransport.java:1880) at com.sun.mail.smtp.SMTPTransport.protocolConnect(SMTPTransport.java:648) at javax.mail.Service.connect(Service.java:317) at javax.mail.Service.connect(Service.java:176) at javax.mail.Service.connect(Service.java:125) at javax.mail.Transport.send0(Transport.java:194) at javax.mail.Transport.send(Transport.java:124) at org.apache.commons.mail.Email.sendMimeMessage(Email.java:1459) ... 150 more Caused by: javax.net.ssl.SSLHandshakeException: No appropriate protocol (protocol is disabled or cipher suites are inappropriate) at java.base/sun.security.ssl.HandshakeContext.<init>(HandshakeContext.java:170) at java.base/sun.security.ssl.ClientHandshakeContext.<init>(ClientHandshakeContext.java:98) at java.base/sun.security.ssl.TransportContext.kickstart(TransportContext.java:221) at java.base/sun.security.ssl.SSLSocketImpl.startHandshake(SSLSocketImpl.java:433) at java.base/sun.security.ssl.SSLSocketImpl.startHandshake(SSLSocketImpl.java:411) at com.sun.mail.util.SocketFetcher.configureSSLSocket(SocketFetcher.java:507) at com.sun.mail.util.SocketFetcher.startTLS(SocketFetcher.java:447) at com.sun.mail.smtp.SMTPTransport.startTLS(SMTPTransport.java:1875) ... 157 more

Emails were able to be sent successfully in the past, only after creating and deploying a build after the Commerce Cloud 2106 update did the problem start.

Note: Similar errors can also be observed with any third-party server communication, the impact is not limited only to email servers.
