How to specify 'Not in Hierarchies' when importing master data into an existing dimension?

• SAP Analytics Cloud (Enterprise) 2020.21.8

1. Import master data into an exisiting dimesnion. 
2. The members that should not be included in alternate hierarchies are left blank.
3. When we import this into SAC, all blanks are assigned to <root> when the hierarchies are mapped.
