2928400 - ASE hangs after database backups fail with timeslice errors - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • On SAP ASE 160 SP03 PL08 and SP03 PL08 HF1, database backups and connection to the ASE backupserver via SITE HANDLER fail due to timeslice errors.
  • The ASE errorlog reports:

kernel  timeslice error: spid 665 exhausted its 'time slice' of 100 milliseconds and additional 'cpu grace time' of 1000 ticks (100000 milliseconds). It has been marked for termination.

SQL causing error :

SYB_BACKUP...sp_who
DUMP DATABASE

  • Accompanying stacktraces reference the following sets of functions:
  1. sb_getsite()
    lc__fill()
    lc_newconn()
    openremote()
    estremote()
    execrproc()
    setprocenv()
    execproc()
    s_execute()
  2. lc_findconn()
    readremote()
    rpcdata()
    dpdb_poll_async_bs_rpc()
    dpdb_main()
    s_execute()
  • spinlock messages:

Spinlock SITEBUF_SPIN at address 0x0000000146dcfa00 is an orphan locked spinlock. llock : 1 lowner : 0. Task 51839372 was the lastowner of this lock and timeslice of this task will be reset to release the orphan locked spinlock properly

  • Following a spate of above timeslice errors, the ASE server becomes inaccessible. It needs to be shut down and restarted.
