You logged in the SAP Excel Add-in and you are trying to add a report, but you are facing the error message "Operation not possible; select a cell range".
- SAP ByDesign, Excel Add-in
- SAP Cloud for Customer, Excel Add-In
Reproducing the Issue
Log in SAP Excel Add-in.
Click on Insert Report button.
See the error message "Operation not possible; select a cell range".
Usually, this kind of error message appears when you did not start Excel correctly and no worksheet is being displayed, hence everything in Excel is grayed out. Also, it will happen if you are trying to insert a report in tabs which are exclusive for Charts, Macros and any other Excel Template which has no cells.
SAP Excel Add-in only inserts the report in the worksheet, it does not create a new worksheet, so its programming logic is like:
1. Is Excel opened?
2. Is there any available worksheet in the workbook?
3. Is there any selected cell (A1, A2, A3)?
Let's suppose that these three conditions have been successfully attended and you decided to insert the report XYZ into the worksheet Sheet1, due to your business needs, you selected the cell range C4. The SAP Excel Add-in will read these three previously given information and will add the report exactly in the Sheet1 and its first report data will be displayed in the cell C4, just like selected.
As an example, you can create a tab in the excel only for chart (right click on the Sheet1 tab > Insert > Chart > Ok). Try to insert a report into the chart and you will receive the same error message. Even though you have a worksheet (chart), you do not have any selected cell range.
If you started Excel and it is grayed out, no worksheet available to display, you can restart your computer and it should correct it.
Please select an available worksheet and make sure that you selected a cell to insert the report. Once it is done, the report inserting will work properly.
