SPAM/SAINT upgrade stuck in DDIC_ACTIVATION or IMPORT_PROPER phase with below symptoms.

In the log file trans/log/SLOG.<SID>, you find the following messages repeatedly:

WARNING: System <SID>. Warning.        <date and time> :
WARNING:        Background job RDDIMPDP could not be started or terminated abnormally.
      Please check that the R/3 system is running.
      Please check the system. Use transactions SM21, SM37, SM50.
WARNING:        (This warning is harmless if no further warnings follow.)

In transaction SM37, verifying job RDDIMPDP, the following is displayed:

Checking the system messages in transaction SM21, the following is logged:

<time> BTC 013 000 DDIC ED 1 > Variant IMPACTMRG is invalid
<time> BTC 013 000 DDIC EF N BP_JOB_EDITOR: Job RDDMASGL is invalid. Reason:
<time> BTC 013 000 DDIC EF T > Step 1 contains illegal values
