2041442 - UPDATE STATISTICS on hyper-partitioned tables is very slow - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • UPDATE STATISTICS on tables with high number of partitions (over 1000) is very slow.

  • Individual partitions can have update statistics run very quickly but the time for the update statistics at the table level far exceeds the sum of the times for each partition.
  • The stacktrace for the slow UPDATE STATISTICS spid references the following functions --

    In isql:

dbcc traceon (3604)
go
dbcc stacktrace (<CREATE INDEX spid> retrieved via sp_who or DBACockpit->Process Monitor)
go
