1958443 - CREATE TABLE command succeeds, but returns "Warning: Row size ... could exceed row size limit" or fails with ASE error 1701 even when the row size is within the limit stated in the message -- SAP ASE

  • When attempting to create a table using wide columns, the command returns a warning message even when specifying a size within the stated limit indicated in the message.
  • For example:
    1> create table mywide (a varchar(1961))
    2> go
Warning: Row size (1975 bytes) could exceed row size limit, which is 1962 bytes.
  • Why the discrepancy in the width reported? How can one determine the maximum allowable column width for a given column type?
